Mechvibes not working: 7 checks in order

Written 3 October 2026 · Windows 10 and 11

"No sound" in Mechvibes isn't one problem. Hearing nothing anywhere, hearing it only in the app's own window, and losing it only inside a game are three different faults with three different causes. Sort the symptom first, then work down in order of likelihood.

Sort the symptom

  • No sound anywhere → checks 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Sound only while the Mechvibes window is focused → checks 5, 7
  • Silent only in games or elevated windows → check 6
  • Soundpack list is empty → checks 2, 4

Work through these in order

  1. Confirm a soundpack is actually selected

Symptom — the app is running but nothing plays

This is the most common cause. Mechvibes separates the engine from the sounds, so if no soundpack is selected — or the list failed to load — the app looks completely normal and stays silent. Open the window, confirm one pack is selected and the list isn't empty, and check the in-app volume slider and on/off toggle while you're there.

  2. Check how the soundpack landed in the folder

Symptom — a pack you downloaded doesn't appear in the list

A soundpack has to be extracted and placed as a folder, with its config file and audio inside. Dropping the zip in, or ending up with a folder nested one level too deep, means it won't be detected. After placing it, quit the app fully from the tray icon and start it again.

  3. Check the Windows output device and per-app volume

Symptom — other audio works, typing sounds don't

Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer. Make sure Mechvibes isn't at zero and that its output device is the speaker or headset you're actually using. An app's output often stays pinned to a device you disconnected — Bluetooth earbuds are the usual culprit. If you changed devices, restart the app.

  4. Install or repair the Visual C++ redistributable

Symptom — the app starts but plays nothing, or soundpack loading fails

This is the fix reported most often in the community. When the runtime audio playback depends on is missing or damaged, the app launches and stays mute. Install Microsoft's Visual C++ redistributable (or repair/reinstall it if already present), restart the PC, then launch the app.

  5. Check whether antivirus is blocking global key detection

Symptom — sound only plays while the Mechvibes window is focused

Typing sound apps use a global input hook so they can read keys pressed outside their own window. That technique is the same family as a keylogger, so some antivirus and corporate endpoint tools block it on behavior. When it's blocked, the app only receives input in its own window — exactly this symptom. Check your antivirus block log, add the install folder to its exclusions, and restart.

  6. Run it as administrator

Symptom — silent only in games or windows launched as administrator

For security, Windows stops a normal-privilege program from receiving key input from an elevated window. Losing the sound inside an admin-level program or certain games isn't a bug, it's that rule. Right-click the executable → Run as administrator. To avoid doing it every time, open the executable's Properties → Compatibility → "Run this program as an administrator."

  7. Reinstall clean, or move to the successor

Symptom — you did all six and nothing changed

The official repo has a report of this being fixed by deleting everything related to Mechvibes and reinstalling (your settings and soundpacks go with it, so back up the packs you want to keep).

If that doesn't do it, changing version is faster than more debugging. The latest stable release on the official repo is v2.3.4, 8 December 2023, and the README says the repo becomes legacy once MechvibesDX is stable. MechvibesDX rewrote the audio engine in Rust and improved soundpack compatibility and load speed. If your problem lives in the older engine, it may simply not exist there.

On the "only works when focused" symptom — it's reported on the official repo for Windows 11 with v2.3.4 (issue #311, since closed). The thread doesn't record a resolution.

If you've been through all seven

Two options left. To stay free and in the same family, move to MechvibesDX. To remove soundpack hunting, folder paths and config files from your life entirely, switch to an app that ships its sounds. Checks 1, 2 and 4 above exist because the engine and the sounds are separate pieces — in a built-in app those failures have nowhere to happen.

The no-soundpack option

Tadak — the sounds are already in it

A tray app for Windows 10 and 11. No soundpack folders, no config files to touch.

  • 30 sounds built in — 6 free with no time limit, all 30 for $3.90 one-time (not a subscription)
  • Works in full-screen games — Ctrl+Alt+K mutes it instantly
  • Auto-mutes video calls — goes quiet while Zoom, Teams, Discord or Skype is active
  • What you type is never stored or sent — it works offline

To be straight with you: Tadak uses a global input hook too, so checks 5 (antivirus) and 6 (admin rights) apply exactly the same. Its installer isn't code-signed yet either, so you'll see a SmartScreen warning. What switching fixes is the soundpack class of problems — 1, 2, 3 and 4.

FAQ

It was working and then suddenly stopped

An output device change is the usual reason. Connect or disconnect Bluetooth earbuds, or switch to monitor speakers, and the app's output can stay on the old device. Check the volume mixer as in check 3 and restart the app. If it happened right after a Windows update, also look at check 5 — security software re-blocking the input hook.

The sound lags behind my typing

Either the soundpack's audio files are long, or the playback engine can't keep up with overlapping sounds. Try a soundpack with shorter samples first. If it still trails, try MechvibesDX, which rewrote the audio engine for exactly this kind of problem.

My antivirus flags it as a keylogger. Is it dangerous?

To read keys pressed outside its own window, a typing sound app installs a global input hook — technically the same family of technique as a keylogger, which is why behavior-based detection trips on it. What matters is what the app keeps and what it sends. With open source you can read the code; otherwise, block it in your firewall and see whether it still works. Tadak's handling is written out here.

Same problem on macOS

Different cause on a Mac. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility (and Input Monitoring) and confirm the app is allowed. If permission is granted but it still doesn't work, removing the app from that list and re-adding it usually does. Note that Tadak is Windows-only for now.
